Component plant: make the warehouse books real first

Inventory
Real-time
Scan-based receipts & issues, executable FIFO
Picking errors
Traceable
PDA operations leave a full trail
Paper documents
Greatly reduced
Electronic document flow
Problem
Raw materials were stacked arbitrarily with batches mixed; kitting relied on calls and operator memory, with errors found late; inventory was only known at month-end closing — a black box in between. Locations were not defined, and FIFO depended on memory, so ageing stock turned into pure cost.
Approach
Warehouse discipline first: define zones and bins, bind single batch and single category to pallet and bin; scan at put-away, kitting, transfer and return, with the system flagging older batches for FIFO; push suppliers towards unified cloud label printing to reduce re-labelling at goods receipt; connect legacy equipment through gateways into an IoT hub, replace paper with PDA operations; write back to ERP bidirectionally to avoid duplicate entry.
Outcome
Inventory is visible in real time, FIFO is executable, and kitting errors are traceable; equipment status is monitored centrally and paper documents drop sharply. The structure comes from warehouse and equipment-connectivity practice in electronics component manufacturing — the data foundation for production traceability.
Can be interrogated
Why start with the warehouse?
The warehouse is the data source. If the source is wrong, traceability and costing are fiction — get receiving, issuing and stock right before chasing line transparency.
How are legacy machines connected?
Through serial ports or gateways, with collection and control points configured per vendor protocol, covering most equipment on the market; machines without protocols use scan or manual entry, clearly flagged.
How do MES and ERP divide work?
ERP owns the books, MES owns shop-floor execution; data is written back both ways to cut duplicate entry while keeping each system's documents independent.
What if suppliers will not label?
Cover key suppliers first and print internal labels at receipt; put the labelling spec into purchasing requirements and improve step by step.
